Residents have some fond memories of the shop:

buy a halfpenny dip from a box on the counter.

cutting the cheese with a wire

You could buy one cigarette at a time in the village shop

On a Saturday I would get 4d pocket money and go straight to Mrs Bakers and spend it all on liquorice… mum use to do her weekly shop there too.

Mrs Baker had a dog called muffin; how do we remember all this stuff it just comes flooding back when you see a picture that triggers your memories.

Mrs baker’s shop used to have all her sweet jars in the window what a big selection she had spent all my pocket money there

I can remember her cutting the large cheese with a wire.

Bought a packet of Polo’s for 2 old pence.

Earlier than that in the late 1950’s I used to buy packets of Kensitas cigarettes for Cyril Davey costing 1 shilling and 11 pence.

Cyril and his wife Wynn used to live at the top of Church Path.

As a mechanic he repaired our machinery. He was a chain smoker.

Years earlier he and Wynn competed in motorcycle and sidecar races.

Following an accident Wynn lost a leg. Having an artificial one she travelled around on a battery powered scooter.

While travelling through Blake Gardens adjacent to the river Parrett a dog ran across her path. In a panic to break she pressed the accelerator instead and went down the riverbank. Luckily the tide was right out, and she stopped just before reaching the water.  Needless to say, she was absolutely covered in mud and was rescued by the Fire Brigade.

There was another shop in Bawdrip too! Mrs Downs on the corner before south view drive. Mrs downs had a shop

Didn’t Barrow’s run the shop 1st ? And Kathy Downs moved in after with her two sons Andrew and David ?

it was a general stores. definitely sold chocolate definitely sold ice creams… and frozen peas!

Kathy Downs always dressed immaculately with painted nails, 2 boys yes that’s right

According to a record I have the name is Alan Barrell and wife Kitty who renovated the house in 1968 and was there until 1977 when the Downs came until 1994. Not sure who came then after. Bye the way did the shop have a name ?
