In Bawdrip we are always looking at what we do in church.
With the agreement of the Archdeacon we have been granted a temporary licence to make some changes to the interior of the church. We have decided that we should be trying to make better use of the building. To this end we have temporarily removed some of the pews in the North aisle (this is the one on the left hand side when you are facing the altar and has the effigy of Sir Simon de Bradney in it. As always changes of this type require assistance. So far we have, over two weekends been able to not only remove the pews but also build up the central part of the area and reinforce some of the floor joists that were looking a bit worse for ware.
As can be seen from the photos there is a before view showing the area full of pews, and after view with the pews removed and finally a picture showing the pews preparing to move to their new temporary home (a secure barn where they will be kept dry). Originally there was seating for approximately 70 people. With the new arrangement there will be six pews placed around the walls (seating 40) and in the middle (once carpeted) chairs that will seat 25 – 30 depending on the layout. In this way we hope that over the next 12 months we can get an idea of how the space can be used and the impact it will have.
If the temporary arrangement proves successful we can then apply for a faculty to make the change permanent.
If you are new to the village here is the latest information to help you settle into your new home.
